ORMA Modular formwork for great height structures

The Sulfuro Primario de Cerro Verde Project is a macroproject for the expansion of the Cerro Verde mine, which has the objective of tripling copper production.Experience gained from the Toquepala Project was of great help to ULMA Construcción when confronting the new challenges posed by this work. It is also worth mentioning that the largest construction companies in Peru participated in this project.

The project encompassed the construction of the first, second and third crushers, Silos, Mills, Flotation System, Grinder, Recycling Chamber, Filters, Warehouses, etc. Some of the most important structures to be specially considered are the silos, which are 41 m high structures with an area of 1625 m2, and the mills, which are large block structures of 5 m high and within an area of 1550 m2.
Among the challenges to be faced, the complexity of making the formwork for the mills, silos and first crusher is stressed since these structures imply the use of large volumes of concrete.

 

In the silos it was necessary to shore-up 2.50 m thick slabs with a mezzanine height of 19.50 m.Each one of the mills required casting of 1000m3 to be excavated in 12 hours.The most significant difficulties were encountered in shoring-up the heavily loaded structures (slabs). Accordingly, it was necessary to carry out a detailed analysis of how the shoring would behave.The same situation presented itself in the mill casting, for which the formwork supported very high pressure as applied by the concrete. For this reason, the structures were anchored and welded in order to guarantee their solidity.
